MILWAUKEE – Yesterday evening, the Milwaukee Area Science Advocates (MASA) hosted an event to honor ten inspiring women at their inaugural STEM in Style event. The event gave ten honorees a chance to showcase their work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as their own personal style during a runway show.
The 170 guests quickly filled the room with fashion and chatter at the Milwaukee Athletic Club Friday night. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hor d’oevres, as well as some fun facts about MASA before the event program began. Many of the attendees were surprised to find out that MASA formed less than a year ago given the far reach of their community programs and events.
The evening started with keynote speaker Amber Bakkum of the Medical College of Wisconsin and MASA’s Grants Manager, who highlighted the need for such an event.

She stated that many small acts and conversations that lead to young women pursuing careers in STEM go unnoticed, when in fact these events are pivotal. Bakkum noticed that many of these inspiring women are caught saying “Oh, I didn’t do anything” but this event is an opportunity to respectfully disagree and to say thank you.
The honorees were nominated by the public for their contributions to the community in science education, public health, and sustainability, and for inspiring younger generations. The runway show featuring the ten honorees showcased each woman’s personal style.
Following the runway show, guests had the opportunity to enjoy fashion-related science demonstrations, a silent auction with over 25 prizes, and a science themed photo booth. As the guests and honorees mingled throughout the evening, it was evident that new connections were forming and honorees were even mentoring some of the guests.
The proceeds from the event will go to sponsor and expand MASA’s community programs such as their Urban Garden Project with the Milwaukee Women’s Center and Live Science Club with Browning Elementary School.
