The Milwaukee Area Science Advocates (MASA) is a completely volunteer-led organization. Our form of compensation for these roles is the satisfaction of knowing we are making a difference in the Milwaukee community.

Managers are appointed to 1 year terms.  Directors are appointed to 2 year terms. Elections will occur at the end of the year for both Director and Manager positions. For more information about elections, contact us at contact@milwaukeescience.org.


Leadership Positions


Executive Assistant (5-10 Hours / Week)

The Executive Assistant is responsible for providing professional administrative support to ensure MASA operates in an organized, efficient, and professional manner. The Executive Assistant provides the necessary leadership skills to work effectively with leadership (BoD, Managers, and Secretary), volunteers, donors, and community members to accomplish the strategic goals of the organization. The Executive Assistant will:

  • Provide administrative support to the President and Board of Directors as needed, including but not limited to detailed calendar management for internal organization meetings, expense/annual report filing and record keeping, mail processing (at MEC), invitation coordination, and travel coordination
  • Coordinate meetings, including attendee management, materials preparation, room set-up and issue resolution
  • Maintain wide knowledge and understanding of internal organization by assisting the Operations Director in assigning filing systems, creating copies of documents, and updating files and project folders
  • Review organization literature and materials, and distribution or filing of materials
  • Assist with special projects, volunteer training and other general office tasks as needed or assigned
  • Work closely with administrative assistants to build a cohesive team while exhibiting leadership qualities
  • Monitor the contact email inbox and forward messages to the corresponding Managers and Directors as needed
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned

Education Manager (5-10 Hours / Week)

The Education Manager develops and directs educational programs including school visits, presentations, media, and local events. Emphasis for education will be on public health, sustainability, and increasing science literacy. Education material will fall into two categories: 1. Teach scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. 2. Inform the public about policy, importance of science funding, and being “informed voters.” The Education Manager will:

  • Develop partnerships with other organizations that serve public education services
  • Manage a contact list of partnering organizations/other resources related to education
  • Develop or externally source educational material for use in programs and media
  • Identify education opportunities for MASA to participate in and ensure our participation in local events. This includes collaboration with the Events Manager to have an educational presence at MASA events.
  • Organize and maintain schedules/volunteer assignments for educational events
  • Manage inventory of any educational supplies
  • Generate original content that educates the public through traditional or new media

Events Manager (5-10 Hours / Week)

The Events Manager is responsible for coordinating staff and activities while preparing for and executing events. The Events Manager will work closely with the Program Director to ensure deadlines and budgets are adhered to as well as:

  • Plan an event from start to finish that is consistent with the ideals of MASA and the objective set forth by the Program Director
  • Collaborate with Advocacy and Outreach teams to determine activities during the event
  • Secure a venue that is accessible and conducive to the needs of the event and obtains any required permits
  • Determine necessary equipment for the event and source and acquire the equipment at a competitive price or as a donation
  • Identify roles and responsibilities of volunteers and develop training guide for the event
  • Staff event and train day-of volunteers
  • Coordinate with Operations team to implement effective ways for volunteers and leadership to communicate on the day of the event
  • Coordinate with Operations team on new volunteer recruiting on the day of the event
  • Create an itinerary for the event that includes all relevant parties and communicates this to volunteers and leadership
  • Coordinate with Communications and Outreach teams to promote the event
  • Ensure proper safety and security measures are in place and that all participants are following venue and permit rules and guidelines

Administrator Positions


Social Media Administrator (5-10 Hours / Week)

Social Media Administrators will receive direction from the Social Media Manager and will take ownership of 1 social media platform to actively engage with the community on the platform. Social Media Administrators will:

  • Research and compile a list of local science education, public health and sustainability events in line with MASA’s mission on a weekly basis
  • Publish the events on the organization’s website as a resource for the community
  • Communicate potential outreach events to the Outreach division to coordinate MASA’s community involvement
  • Partner with the Social Media Manager to publish social media postings highlighting community and MASA events

Assistant Positions


Calendar Coordinator (3-5 Hours / Week)

The Calendar Coordinator will receive direction from the Marketing Manager and will research and compile a list of local science education, public health and sustainability events in the Milwaukee area. Responsibilities for the Calendar Coordinator include:

  • Partner with various organization leaders to identify key local events, coordinate event appearances, publish event postings and develop the events calendar strategy
  • Research and compile a list of local science education, public health, and sustainability events in line with MASA’s mission on a weekly basis
  • Publish the events on the organization’s website as a resource for the community
  • Communicate potential outreach events to the Outreach division to coordinate MASA’s community involvement
  • Partner with the Social Media Manager to publish social media postings highlighting community and MASA events

Social Media Editor (3-5 Hours / Week)

Social Media Editors will receive direction from the Social Media Manager and will work to build and execute a social media strategy to grow engagement with the community. The Social Media Editors will conduct the following:

  • Schedule and post verified external content, original content and promotional content to our platforms in accordance with scheduling guidelines
  • Write and edit copy for shared content such as local events, MASA events, donations, volunteer requests, etc.
  • Monitor incoming messages and comments on Facebook and Twitter, responding as needed
  • Research articles, make suggestions, and review other’s suggested articles for posting

Recruiter (3-5 Hours / Week)

Recruiters will partner with the Operations Director and HR Manager to identify and recruit individuals who fit organization goals. Recruiter will assist to:

  • Identify and build partnerships with community organizations promoting interests similar to MASA volunteer needs
  • Identify and build partnerships with community institutions offering or requiring volunteer or internship experience
  • Maintain and publicize current position openings
  • Assist with organizing short-term volunteers with occasional event needs

Science Club Instructor (1-3 Hours / Week)

Instructors will lead exciting science experiences for small groups of children in an after-school program setting. Programs are generally high-energy, entertaining, engaging, and “hands-on.” Children are generally from underprivileged and underrepresented backgrounds. You will implement MASA’s education philosophy, which emphasizes inquiry-based learning, fun, inspiration, and mentorship. Opportunities will be available to help contribute to content of programs if desired, but content and organizational support is provided. We are currently recruiting Instructors to be part of the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Science Club, which meets on Fridays at 3pm every other week.

Volunteers must be:

  • Able to self-transport to required locations in Milwaukee Area.
  • Available for a minimum of 3 hours every other week, but once per week desired.
  • Reliable and consistent schedule.
  • Able to pass background check to work with minors.

Ideal candidates will also be:

  • Up-beat, child-friendly, and outgoing.
  • Some science background and education experience.
  • Early afternoon availability (3pm or earlier).

Working closely with the Operations Director, Merchandiser will assist with:

  • Pricing, purchasing, inventorying, and promoting of MASA merchandise and supplies

Team Contributor Positions


Media Relations Coordinator (1-3 Hours / Week)

The Media Relations Coordinator will receive direction from the Director of Communications and will be responsible for overseeing communications to the media, including preparing articles, press kits, press releases, and other content initiatives. The Media Relations Coordinator will:

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with media reps
  • Research and compile a list of local media contacts, building relationships with local media
  • Assist with coordinating interviews and media appearances
  • Create press releases and media advisories for MASA events and initiatives
  • Advise partnering organizations requesting assistance with press contact and media promotion
  • Detect public relations issues as they emerge and partner with organization leaders to address them
  • Assemble press kits for MASA Focus projects
  • Partner with the Social Media Manager and Managing Editor to publish press releases to the website and social media

Social Media Moderator (1-3 Hours / Week)

Social Media Moderators will receive direction from the Social Media Manager and will work to provide excellent customer service to our followers and grow engagement with the community. The Social Media Moderators will conduct the following:

  • Monitor incoming messages and comments on Facebook and Twitter, responding or removing as needed
  • Write copy for shared content such as local events, MASA events, donations, volunteer requests, etc. in the Social Media Drafts folder in Google Drive
  • Research articles, make suggestions, and review other’s suggested articles

Community Networking/Partnerships Liaison (Any Hours)

Community Liaisons work alongside the Outreach Director and Managers to:

  • Make contacts and build relationships for MASA with local universities, businesses, public agencies, health centers, schools, unions, community and grassroots organizations, local public science institutions and informal groups, foundations, and nonprofits with missions complementary to MASA mission
  • Represent MASA at local events and conferences, and within personal and professional networks
  • Find ways to engage with partners in support of their missions
  • Inaugurate events for MKE area communities that build trust and goodwill

Designer (Web or Graphics) (Any Hours)

Designers receive direction from the Marketing Manager and will conduct design projects as assigned. Designers will support MASA by:

  • Developing graphics for event flyers, social media, and more
  • Creating infographics and imagery to accompany published works
  • Enhancing and maintain the website
  • Assisting with other design needs as requested

Writer (Any Hours)

Writers receive direction from the Managing Editor and create written works to make science related topics easy to understand and accessible to the public. Writers will:

  • Conduct research and write articles based on the organization’s needs
  • Suggest topics for publication
  • Conduct interviews with local scientists, organizations, representatives, and citizens
  • Partner with Designers to find or develop supporting graphics, photos, etc.

The Cloud and IT Content Assistant will work closely with the IT Manager to:

  • Research, implement, and improve efficiency tools for leadership and broader organization

Translator (Any Hours)

Tranlsators receive direction from the Managing Editor and will translate written copy as needed to support outgoing communication and publication. Translators will:

  • Translate outgoing communication to select audiences
  • Assist with translation requests for social media messages and comments, and incoming email inquiries
  • Translate flyers, articles, graphics, etc. as needed
