Fight the Grad Tax

December 9 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

The mission of the Fight the Grad Tax March is to advocate for graduate, secondary, and elementary education in the United States.

We oppose changes to the tax code as outlined in the House of Representatives “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.”

We believe the plans detailed in both the House and the Senate tax reform plans will negatively alter access to education for lower and middle-class Americans.

The bills include proposals that will harm education and create other sweeping income tax changes that will disproportionately impact working Americans. These include:

– Considering graduate student tuition waivers as income
– Taxing employer-provided tuition reimbursements
– Removing the tax deduction on student loan interest payments
– Removing the tax deduction for teacher-funded school supplies

On Saturday, December 9th at 2:30pm, we plan to march from Pere Marquette Park to Senator Ron Johnson’s office located at 517 East Wisconsin Ave. We will deliver a letter to Johnson detailing our concerns about these proposed tax changes.

We hope to advocate to Senator Johnson that a common-sense approach to tax reform, that will not negatively impact access to education, is the best way to proceed as Congress reconciles the House and Senate bills.

Join us in standing up for graduate students, the American worker, and education in the United States! The future of education in the United States will be determined over the next two weeks and we desperately need your support!
